🌿 Wellness Series: Part 7 of 10 – The Creative Power of “Productive Meditation”
We often hear that meditation is about clearing the mind completely—finding a quiet space where no thoughts can enter. While that’s wonderful for lowering anxiety, as parents and creators, we know that sometimes our most “distracted” moments are actually our most brilliant.
In this week’s wellness installment, we’re looking at why letting your mind wander isn’t a failure of focus—it’s a superpower for your creativity.
🧠 Beyond the “Quiet” Mind
Did you know that the part of your brain that lights up when you daydream (the Default Mode Network) is the same place where your best ideas are born? It’s where Albert Einstein found his inspiration, and it’s where you might find the spark for your next family adventure or creative project.
The secret to wellness isn’t staying “in the moment” 100% of the time. It’s about flexibility. We want to be present when we’re reading a story to our little ones, but we also need to give ourselves permission to daydream while folding laundry or taking a stroll.
💡 Try “Productive Meditation”
Instead of trying to think about nothing, try focusing on one creative goal or a problem you’d like to solve. This is what author Cal Newport calls Productive Meditation.
By focusing your attention on a single creative endeavor while your body is busy with a simple task (like walking or even coloring!), you activate both your “focus” brain and your “daydream” brain. When these two work together, amazing things happen!
🎨 Put it into Practice
This week, pick one of the Calming Friday Adult Coloring Pages to practice this “focused wandering.”
- The Challenge: While you color with your child, don’t worry about clearing your head. Instead, pick one small thing you’re excited about—a new recipe, a garden plan, or a story idea—and let your mind play with it while your hands move the crayons.
Wellness Tip: Happiness comes from being able to jump between states. Be “in the moment” for the giggles, but let your mind “wander for wonder” when you need a creative boost.
