We often spend so much time focusing on our children’s developmental milestones—the first words, the first steps, the first day of preschool—that we forget our own wellness needs. In the previous parts of this series, we’ve covered the basics of routine and nutrition. Today, for Part 6, we’re shifting gears to something a bit more lighthearted but equally vital: The Power of Play.
As parents of preschoolers, we are surrounded by play every day. We see the joy in a cardboard box turned into a spaceship or the concentration over a watercolor painting. But when was the last time you played?
Why Play Matters for Parents
Science shows that play isn’t just a “break” from reality; it’s a necessary function for a healthy brain. For adults, engaging in playful activities can:
- Lower Stress Levels: It triggers the release of endorphins, our body’s natural feel-good chemicals.
- Improve Relationships: Shared laughter and playfulness strengthen the bond between partners and friends.
- Boost Creativity: Stepping away from “to-do lists” allows the mind to solve problems in new, innovative ways.
Integrating Play into Your Busy Schedule
You don’t need hours of free time to rediscover your playful side. Here are a few ways to bring a sense of “Classic Joy” back into your routine:
- Join In, Don’t Just Watch: Next time your little one is coloring or building with blocks, don’t just supervise. Grab a crayon or a brick and join the fun. Let your imagination lead the way.
- Rediscover an Old Hobby: Think back to what you loved before life got so “busy.” Whether it was photography, dancing in the kitchen, or a specific sport, find 15 minutes this week to revisit it.
- Laughter as Wellness: Whether it’s a funny podcast or a silly game of tag in the backyard, prioritize moments that make you laugh out loud.
Tomorrow’s Activity
Since we are halfway through our 10-part series, let’s make tomorrow a “Play Day.” Focus less on the “mess” and more on the “memory.” Wellness is found in the smiles just as much as the green smoothies.
Coming up next in Part 7: We’ll be diving into the importance of Quiet Moments and how to find them in a house that’s rarely silent.
