Balancing Life with Your Children
Balance Series – Part 1 of 10
Every parent wants the very best for their children. We want to support them, encourage them, and give them opportunities to grow and succeed. But sometimes, in the middle of trying to do everything for our children, we forget something important — parents need balance too.
It is very easy to fill schedules with after-school programs, sports, clubs, appointments, and activities. While many of these things can be wonderful experiences for children, too much can leave both parents and kids feeling exhausted and overwhelmed.
Sometimes children simply want more quality time with their parents.
A quiet evening at home, reading together, sharing dinner, watching a movie, or talking about their day may mean more to them than another busy activity. Taking time to ask children how they feel about their schedules can often lead to surprising and honest conversations.
Creating balance also means understanding limits. When children are constantly rushing from one activity to another, they may struggle to finish homework, get enough rest, or simply have time to relax and be kids. Parents can begin creating healthier routines by choosing activities carefully instead of overloading the family calendar.
Parents often face another challenge as well — balancing work, volunteering, responsibilities, and family life all at once. Many moms and dads try to help everyone around them while quietly running themselves exhausted in the process.
One helpful step is simply being open with children in age-appropriate ways. Talking about work responsibilities or busy days can help children better understand why parents sometimes feel tired or short on time. Children are often more understanding and helpful when they feel included instead of confused.
Another important lesson for families is learning how to say “no.” Not every event, volunteer opportunity, or extra commitment needs to be accepted. Saying no to unnecessary stress can sometimes mean saying yes to more peaceful family time.
At Gabberdaberdo, we believe balance is not about perfection. It is about creating a home filled with connection, understanding, rest, and meaningful moments together.
